The Medical University of South Carolina Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency in Charleston, SC is seeking to fill one (1) categorical PGY-3 position beginning July 1, 2026. The anticipated graduation date for this position would be June 2029, pending applicant’s current operative case log and success.

About the Program

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a quaternary-care hospital based in Charleston, SC that receives referrals from throughout south.  The Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency is one of the oldest in the nation, having been founded in 2012.  It represents one of the most prominent training programs in not only the south, but in the nation.  The mission of the program is to develop well-rounded, competent surgeons in all aspects of vascular surgery including, but not limited to, complex aortic endovascular and open procedures, peripheral artery endovascular and open procedures, hemodialysis access procedures, and complex deep and superficial venous interventions.  There are currently two (2) residents per year, one of which enters a dedicated 2-year research track between PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. The current opening is for a candidate that will progress straight through, without additional dedicated research time.

Thank you for your interest in MUSC. We are proud to offer a 5-year integrated vascular surgery residency to applicants straight out of medical school. We offer a wide array of both open and endovascular operative experiences in varied settings including inpatient, outpatient, academic, and community-based settings.

With a total of nine faculty members based out of the Charleston, SC campus of MUSC and the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC, we have a very busy residency.  We are excited to teach the next generation of vascular surgeons in any clinical scope of practice that they choose – academic or private practice.  Our program highlights include: 

  • Large volume of open and endovascular fenestrated and customized aortic surgeries
  • Complex endovascular interventions performed in 2 hybrid operating rooms
  • Broad clinical practice encompassing all aspects of vascular surgery including cerebrovascular, aortic, peripheral vascular, dialysis access, wound care, and venous disease.
  • Opportunities for clinical research and involvement in clinical trials
  • Protected time to attend various vascular conferences throughout the nation
  • An enriching weekly 3-hour didactic conference encompassing case planning conference, journal club, research meeting, faculty lectures, surgical grand rounds, and morbidity and mortality conferences.
