Rosemont, Ill. – The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is pleased to announce the results of the 2025 elections for Vice President and Secretary, revealed today during the SVS Annual Business Meeting held as part of the Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM) in New Orleans, La. These elections represent a vital tradition of member-led leadership and strategic continuity for the organization.
The SVS congratulates Andres Schanzer, MD, DFSVS, as the incoming Vice President and Malachi G. Sheahan III, MD, as the newly elected Secretary. These roles are integral to the strategic direction and governance of SVS.
The Vice President plays a central role in coordinating the activities of the Society’s Councils, among other committees. This one-year term will be followed by terms as President-Elect and President, ensuring continuity in strategic leadership.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to serve in this role,” said Schanzer, newly elected Vice President. “My goal is to bring together all our diverse members and to advance our society to best serve our patients.”
Dr. Schanzer is the Cutler Distinguished Chair and Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UMass Medical School. He has served in national leadership roles, founded the UMass Memorial Center for Complex Aortic Disease, and leads the CARPE-CMD clinical trial. He has authored over 250 manuscripts and delivered over 300 invited talks worldwide.
Serving a three-year term, the Secretary is responsible for strategic alignment and coordination of key SVS communications, including regular member outreach, SVS Connect, Vascular.org and social media.
“This is a pivotal time for our field,” said Sheahan, Secretary-elect. “I am excited to work for the SVS and its members as we come together to increase public awareness and improve outcomes for our patients.”
Chair of Surgery at LSUHSC, Dr. Sheahan is a prolific academic and clinical leader recognized for innovations in vascular education and practice. He is also the Medical Editor of the SVS’ newspaper, Vascular Specialist.
Leadership Transitions
SVS also celebrates key leadership transitions in 2025:
Dr. Keith Calligaro, MD, DFSVS assumes the role of President, succeeding Dr. Matthew Eagleton, MD, DFSVS, who transitions to Immediate Past President.
Dr. Linda Harris, MD, DFSVS, formerly Vice President, steps into the role of President-Elect.
“As we welcome our new officers and celebrate the accomplishments of our outgoing leaders, we honor a continued legacy of excellence and innovation in vascular surgery,” said Dr. Calligaro.
