RFA for JVS-Vascular Science Editor-in-Chief
Applications due: August 24
Summary
The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) invites applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of JVS-Vascular Science (JVS-VS), a fully open-access journal focused on basic and translational research in vascular diseases. This is an exciting leadership opportunity at a pivotal time in the journal’s development, as JVS-VS is now indexed in Web of Science and received its first Journal Impact Factor (JIF = 2.0) in June 2025. The next EIC will have the opportunity to build on this momentum and elevate the journal’s visibility, volume and influence within the vascular surgery research community and beyond.
Key Priorities
The incoming EIC will lead the journal through its next phase of growth, with a focus on:
- Increasing submission and publication volume by attracting high-impact manuscripts that will expand and enhance the audience and authorship pipeline.
- Strengthening the Editorial Board to include the range of expertise needed to optimize the Journal’s impact on vascular science nationally and around the world.
- Enhancing journal visibility and impact through strategic content development and scientific community engagement.
Editor-in-Chief Responsibilities
The EIC will be responsible for:
- Developing and executing a strategic plan for JVS-VS, in collaboration with the JVS Executive Editor and the SVS Director of Publications, that ensures long-term success.
- Overseeing the academic quality of JVS-VS and giving final approval for all material published in the journal.
- Determining and regularly evaluating progress on key performance indicators and setting performance targets for the JVS-VS, with support from the Managing Editor.
- Collaborating with a small team of Associate Editors and providing ongoing guidance and mentorship.
- Holding regular meetings with the Associate Editors and Managing Editor to monitor performance, address workflow issues, and plan initiatives.
- Participating in monthly calls with the full JVS Journals editorial leadership team to support coordination, collaboration and shared learning.
- Reviewing and refreshing the Editorial Board regularly to maintain active engagement and achieve representational priorities.
- Conducting at least one Editorial Board meeting annually to provide an update on the journal, identify areas in need of improvement, and explore opportunities for growth and innovation.
- Developing special issues or themed article collections to drive interest and submissions.
- Contributing to decisions around portfolio policies and workflows, in collaboration with the portfolio’s editorial leadership team.
- Representing the journal at key scientific meetings and encouraging colleagues to consider the journal for their best work.
Qualifications
The most qualified candidate will:
- Be a recognized expert in basic and/or translational science relevant to vascular disease.
- Have a strong publication record and editorial experience.
- Demonstrate a clear vision for growing an open-access scholarly journal in both quality and reach.
- Be committed to rigorous peer review and editorial integrity.
- Possess excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Enjoy working collaboratively across multiple stakeholder groups.
Term, Time Commitment, and Support
Appointment to this role is for a four-year term, renewable for an additional two-year term, dependent on performance and continuing commitment. The anticipated time commitment is 10-15 hours per week, including handling papers in Editorial Manager, reviewing and finalizing the editorial decisions of Associate Editors, and participating in regular or ad hoc meetings related to the journal. While most of the EIC’s responsibilities are carried out remotely, the EIC is expected to attend the VAM each year, as well as an annual one-day EIC retreat at SVS headquarters each fall. The EIC will receive administrative and editorial support from the JVS Editorial Office, as well as a quarterly stipend.
Conflicts of Interest
Per the SVS Policy on Conflict, JVS editors may have no direct financial relationships with industry during their terms of service. A direct financial relationship is a compensated relationship that should generate an IRS Form W-2, 1099, or equivalent income report. If the successful applicant currently has direct financial relationships with industry, these relationships must be terminated within six months of initial appointment.
NB: JVS editors may accept research support as long as funds are allocated to the institution where the research is being conducted, not directly to the individual. In all cases industry-sponsored research support, uncompensated services, and other permitted relationships must be disclosed to the SVS. The EIC cannot have editorial leadership positions with other journals.
Application Process
Applicants must complete the online application form and share their current curriculum vitae for the Search Committee’s review. Please send your CV to Phil Jackson (pjackson@vascularsociety.org), SVS staff liaison to the Search Committee.
SVS is committed to a fair and inclusive selection process and values the contributions of diverse perspectives and experiences to the health of our scholarly journals and to our Society. We encourage qualified applicants of all backgrounds to apply.
