This webinar series will focus on leading through challenging times. For webinar 1 on July 12, SVS has recruited two experts in the field of disaster preparedness who will speak to their experiences during the Boston Marathon Bombing and the Last Vegas Shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. This interview-style webinar will include topics on how to prepare your institution, lessons learned, PTSD, and how to involve trainees in preparedness.
A manual has been created by Dr. Susan Miller Briggs, who will serve as faculty for this webinar. The manual is called "Advanced Disaster Medical Response Manual for Providers 2nd Edition." If you would like to have a copy of the manual, you can purchase one here.

April J. Boyd, MD, PhD, FRCSC (Moderator) - Dr. Boyd is a Professor of Surgery and basic science researcher at the University of Manitoba in Canada. She was the first woman president of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Boyd is the current Chair of the SVS education committee. |

Deborah A. Kuhls, MD, FACS - Dr. Deborah Kuhls is a Professor of Surgery, Acute Care Surgery Division Chief at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and Chief of Trauma at University Medical Center’s Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers in Las Vegas - Nevada’s only Level I Adult and Nevada’s only Pediatric Trauma Center. She is the Second Vice-President-elect of the American College of Surgeons and is the Immediate Past Chair of the Trauma Prevention Coalition and Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) Surgery Section. She served as the Chair of the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma Injury Prevention and Control Committee from 2012-2020, which developed a consensus-based medical-public health approach to firearm injury prevention. She served as a Senior Surgeon in the October 1, 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas and focuses much effort on disaster preparedness locally, regionally and nationally. Her awards include SCCM’s Shubin-Weil Master Clinician/Teacher Award and the National Safety Council Surgeons Award for Service to Safety. She has grant-supported activities in traffic safety, disaster preparedness, and firearm injury prevention. |

Susan Miller Briggs, MD, MPH, FACS - Dr. Susan Briggs is Associate Professor of Surgery and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Global Surgery and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Briggs is an acute care and trauma surgeon and Director of the International Trauma and Disaster Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston. She is the inaugural recipient of the Endowed Chair in Global Surgery at MGH. Currently, she is the Team Commander of the US Government’s Specialty Disaster Medical Assistance Team, the Trauma and Critical Care Team (TCCT) and has responded to domestic and international disasters for many years. Dr. Briggs is the Editor of the American Journal of Disaster Medicine (ADMR) and Advanced Disaster Medical Response (ADMR) Manual and disaster medicine course. She is the past-President of the Panamerican Trauma Association, past Vice-President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and past president of the Boston Surgical Society. She was selected to deliver the ACS 2016 Scudder Oration on Trauma lecture (“Responding to Crisis: Surgeons as Leaders in Disaster Response.”) |
