Overview

Vascular surgeons and their support staff need to maintain knowledge and competence for appropriate billing and coding procedures. The SVS Coding & Reimbursement Workshop is an intensive program designed to provide a comprehensive review of current coding and reimbursement information, including critical updates vital to anyone who wants to become an expert in vascular coding. 

Some of the critical updates covered in the 2022 workshop include:

(Optional) Half-day E & M Coding Workshop*

  • First look at the New 2023 Facility EM Guidelines!
  • Revisions to Categories of EM: Outpatient and Facility. Changes in Facility definitions/ categories.
    • Revision of Outpatient and Inpatient Consultation Code 
    • Revision of inpatient and observation codes
    • Deletion of observation codes 99217-99220
    • Revision of prolonged service code
    • Establishment of New Prolonged Service code

Coding & Reimbursement Workshop

  • 2022-2023 Medicare Update: Fee Schedule, Proposed reduction in the fee schedule of 2023.
    • RVUs and Physician Compensation: Concerned that all your RVUs are not being captured? Make sure the “count” is correct. 
  • Audit Targets, Risk Areas for Vascular Surgeons, and Responding to a Payer Audit. RAC, UPIC and OIG Audits, CBR letters. Understanding the alphabet soup of Medicare audits. 
    • Does an OBL put you at higher risk? What about a vein center?

Learning Objectives - E & M Workshop

By participating in this CME activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the coding and documentation rules for key EM categories
  • Identify the difference between Medicare and private payers as related to E & M coding
  • Understand the documentation requirements for the history, exam and medical decision making components for an EM service
  • Discuss the correct use of EM modifiers in vascular surgery

By participating in this CME activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss the CPT and Medicare changes
  • Demonstrate the application of modifiers for streamlined reimbursement
  • Define the Global Surgical Package and how it impacts billing and reimbursement 
  • Understand the principle of component-coding
  • Discuss the correct coding for key endovascular and open vascular procedures

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for vascular surgeons and their office staff including practice managers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, surgery schedulers, coders, and others who seek to improve and expand their knowledge of accurate coding and reimbursement for vascular surgery. 

Please note this course is ideal for Vascular Trainees, Vascular Fellows, and Vascular Surgeons as the level of the content is intermediate to advanced.

The ACCME requires that the SVS, as an accredited provider of CME, disclose the relevant financial relationships of the planners, faculty, and any other individuals in a position to control content of this activity.   However, Accredited providers do not need to identify, mitigate, or disclose relevant financial relationships for accredited education that is non-clinical, such as leadership or communication skills training.  Therefore, there are no disclosures for this accredited activity.

To help minimize the potential for COVID-19 transmission and contact tracing, all attendees will be required to verify proof of vaccination, and if unvaccinated, verify a negative test (within 72 hours of traveling) to the event.

As safety protocols continue to evolve nationally, SVS will closely monitor and adapt to best practices based on federal and/or local recommendations and guidelines. This may include attendees verifying they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and wearing a mask indoors. Attendees will be notified about any safety protocols being implemented prior to the event.
