Sign up for the Open Payments System under the Physician Payment Sunshine Act
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is encouraging physicians and teaching hospitals to register in CMS Enterprise Portal, requesting access to the Open Payments system. This registration began on June 1.
Open Payments is the national transparency program requiring device manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) to disclose their financial relationships with these two provider groups. Although voluntary, registration will enable physicians and teaching hospitals to review and possibly dispute payments and other transfers of value submitted by industry into this system once they complete registration in the Open Payments system. This second phase of registration begins in July.
Physicians and teaching hospitals will be able to dispute information reported about both them and their institutions. Applicable manufacturers and GPOs will then be able to see disputes and correct data before CMS makes it public after a 45 day period, with an additional 15 days for resolution. Disputes that do not get resolved will be in public data, but shown as “under dispute.” CMS will not mediate any dispute.
