Understanding the Vascular Surgery Workforce

The distribution of the vascular surgery workforce plays a critical role in ensuring patients have timely access to specialized surgical care. This interactive resource lets you explore the geographic distribution of vascular surgeons and surgical facilities across the United States using national workforce data.

Developed through a partnership between the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the UNC-Chapel Hill Cecil G. Sheps Center, this tool helps researchers, policymakers, educators and advocates better understand where vascular surgeons practice and identify opportunities to strengthen access to care.

The Society for Vascular Surgery is proud to participate in this collaborative effort to improve understanding of the vascular surgery workforce and to support informed workforce planning, advocacy and research.

Explore the Interactive Workforce Map

Use the interactive map to explore the distribution of vascular surgeons at multiple geographic levels. You can:

  • View surgeon supply by county, Hospital Referral Region (HRR), or Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA)
  • Display hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers alongside workforce data

About the Data

The Surgical Workforce Distribution Mapping Project combines physician workforce information with facility data to provide a comprehensive view of surgical care capacity across the United States. Key features include:

  • National and state workforce visualization
  • Multiple geographic frameworks, including county, HRR, and CBSA
  • Surgeons practicing at multiple locations
  • Hospital and ambulatory surgical center overlays
  • Data developed in collaboration with participating specialty societies
