The Society for Vascular Surgery Elects Joseph L. Mills, MD, of Baylor College of Medicine to 2021-2022 Officer Lineup

More than 600 members cast votes for SVS vice president

Rosemont, Ill., June 22, 2021 – The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), the leading not-for-profit, professional medical society on establishing causes and treatments for vascular disease, today announced its officers for 2021-2022. Several officers shifted roles and Dr. Joseph L. Mills was elected vice president at the SVS annual business meeting held virtually on June 16, 2021.

SVS leaders for the upcoming year include:

  • Dr. Michael Dalsing, Indiana University School of Medicine (president-elect)
  • Dr. Joseph L. Mills, Sr., Baylor College of Medicine, Houston (vice president)
  • Dr. Amy Reed, University of Minnesota Medical School (secretary)
  • Dr. Keith Calligaro, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (treasurer)
  • Dr. Ronald Dalman, Stanford University (immediate past president)

Joseph L. Mills, MD, is the Reid professor and chief of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy, and program director of vascular surgery integrated residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He specializes in diabetic foot amputation prevention and limb salvage. Dr. Mills has been co-editor of the prestigious "Rutherford's Vascular Surgery" (7th, 8th and 9th editions), the “go-to” textbook for vascular surgery. He is currently an associate editor of the European Journal of Vascular Surgery.

A renowned researcher, Dr. Mills has authored more than 360 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, focused on his clinical and research interests in noninvasive diagnosis, vein graft stenosis, intimal hyperplasia and limb-salvage in patients with diabetes mellitus. He has been the principal investigator for over 50 clinical trials, including a number of current investigations.

“I am honored to be elected as a leader of the Society for Vascular Surgery and hope to utilize my role to further advocate for patients and our profession,” said Dr. Mills. “Our specialty, and medicine in general, are continually changing, and I look forward to being an integral part of how the SVS responds to today’s rapidly evolving health care environment.”

Dr. Mills was recognized by Houstonia Magazine as a 2020 Top Doctor: Vascular Surgery. He and his wife of 44 years, Margaret Schneider Mills, reside in Houston, Texas with their three sons and four grandsons all living nearby.
