Federated or Free-Standing VSB: SVS Member Opinion Poll Results Are In

May 15, 2025

Nearly 1,000 SVS members responded to an opinion poll (fielded in March/April) asking them to analyze key factors and assess whether a Federated Model for the Vascular Surgery Board (VSB) within the current American Board of Surgery (ABS) or a free-standing VSB outside of ABS, would best strengthen and position vascular surgery for its future.  A total of 3,261 members received the poll, and the 978 respondents represent a strong 30% response rate. The demographic mix of the 978 respondents closely matches the overall demographics of SVS membership and is a representative sample within a +/- 3% error range with a 95% confidence level.

Having been asked to review an extensive Task Force report and Executive Summary prior to completing the survey, members were asked:” …which model do you believe will best serve the long-term needs of vascular surgery, and for which are you willing to absorb the risks to achieve the potential benefits?”

A thorough analysis is underway, with a more comprehensive report forthcoming. However, the SVS Executive Board requested that some of the topline findings be immediately shared with members.

  • 51% of respondents favored the current federated model.
  • 49% of respondents favored a free-standing model.

For those who favor the current federated model, maintaining the quality/credibility of the exam, the overall cost to diplomates of change to a free-standing board, and preserving positive relations with the ABS were primary factors.

For those who favor the free-standing model, pursuing greater autonomy in decision-making, having a perception of greater visibility and branding, and having a strengthened potential to petition for a future RC and/or RUC/CPT seat were primary factors.

Another important factor is whether respondents were certified in both vascular surgery and general surgery or vascular surgery alone, as the former strongly favored the current federated model, while the latter favors free-standing.

The SVS Executive Board will discuss next steps in the coming weeks, and a more comprehensive report of results will be compiled and shared. Regardless of any final decision, SVS leadership appreciates the passionate views of members on both sides of this issue and urges members to remain unified and work together in the future.
