Hodgson, chair of the division of vascular surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill., was elected vice president of the Society for Vascular Surgery for 2017-18 at the organization’s Vascular Annual Meeting in early June.
“I am honored to continue my service to the SVS in this new position,” Hodgson said. “As the Society grows, we have much to do. I am committed to ensuring that the next generation of vascular surgeons are prepared for the changes that come so quickly in our field.”
Dr. Hodgson graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, completed his general surgery residency at the Albany Medical Center in New York and his fellowship in vascular surgery at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill.
Dr. Hodgson holds the David Sumner endowed chair in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at SIU, awarded in 2009, and serves as the medical director of the David S. Sumner Vascular Laboratory at Memorial Medical Center, as he has since its opening in 1987.
Dr. Hodgson has published over 100 articles in medical journals, as well as more than 40 book chapters on vascular surgery topics including carotid artery disease, lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, non-invasive vascular evaluation, endovascular therapies, thrombolysis and many others.
He has been the principal investigator of numerous clinical investigational trials of endovascular abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, carotid stenting, thrombolysis and arterial stenting. He speaks frequently at international medical meetings and served for six years on the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Hodgson was the inaugural editor of VESAP and stayed on as co-editor in chief for the subsequent two editions. He has served three terms as treasurer of the Society for Vascular Surgery, chaired the Society’s finance committee for three years, has been a member of the SVS Foundation board of directors, a member of the publications committee and the SVS board of directors.
