Extracorporeal Life Support: Cannulation strategies, decannulation strategies and long-term follow-up

Background

The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) Pediatric Vascular Surgery Task Force invites those who take care of pediatric vascular patients or have an interest in this clinical area to the Pediatric Vascular Surgery Development Group meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. CT. This meeting will address Extracorporeal Life Support: Cannulation strategies, decannulation strategies and long-term follow-up.

Goals:

  1. Review options for veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal life support (ECLS) cannulation in neonates, young children, and adolescents, with a discussion on reperfusion cannula placement.
  2. Review options for decannulation after VV or VA ECLS, with a focus on the pros/cons of arterial and venous reconstruction.
  3. Highlight the importance of long-term follow-up and the lack of longitudinal data on this topic.
  4. Highlight the benefits and challenges of multidisciplinary partnerships between pediatric surgeons and adult vascular surgeons in the care of these patients.
