NEW PCORI FUNDING 

Starting Sept. 3, 2019, the Patient-Centered Research Outcomes Institute has announced it has updated its Research Areas of Interest to include peripheral artery disease for the 2020 funding cycle.

The Broad PCORI (Patient-Centered Research Outcomes Institute) Funding Announcements (PFAs) seek investigator-initiated applications for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects aligned with our priority areas for research. This PFA covers the following four priority areas: Addressing Disparities; Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options; Communication and Dissemination Research, and Improving Health Systems. These broad areas encompass the patient-centered comparative CER we support.

Vascular surgeons believe legs – and lives – are worth saving

Underserved communities continue to struggle with health care disparities such as diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which can lead to limb amputation. Patients in these communities can rely on vascular surgeons, especially those affiliated with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), who work tirelessly to offer patients a range of resources and initiatives aimed at limb salvage. These vascular surgeons stand up to health care inequalities and help patients avoid life-altering outcomes by providing tailored assistance and support. 

The Society for Vascular Surgery Provides Information About Early Warning Signs of PAD

People who chalk up fatigue, discomfort or muscle cramps in their legs to advancing age or temporary muscle soreness, may instead be suffering from peripheral artery disease –PAD – instead.  

An estimated 10 to 12 million people in the United States – most of them over 50 years of age – have PAD, a condition in which plaque builds up in and narrows the arteries of the legs and feet, impeding circulation in the lower extremities. This process can cause pain in the leg, calf thigh or buttocks when walking.
