Hodgson, chair of the division of vascular and endovascular surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill., was elected president of the Society for Vascular Surgery for 2019-20 at the organization’s Vascular Annual Meeting in June.
“The SVS portfolio of quality, outcomes, and appropriateness programs are all coming together and position us well to lead in assuring that patients with vascular disease receive the right care at the right time and in the right facility,” Dr. Hodgson said. “Our patients and healthcare system will be better off for these efforts and I am proud of the SVS for leading the way. The world of medicine is changing and we must grow and change to meet these new challenges.”
Dr. Hodgson graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, completed his general surgery residency at the Albany Medical Center in New York and his fellowship in vascular surgery at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill.
Dr. Hodgson holds the David Sumner endowed chair in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at SIU, awarded in 2009, and serves as the medical director of the David S. Sumner Vascular Laboratory at Memorial Medical Center, as he has since 1987.
Dr. Hodgson has published over 100 articles in medical journals, as well as more than 40 book chapters on vascular surgery topics including carotid artery disease, lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, non-invasive vascular evaluation, endovascular therapies, thrombolysis and many others.
He has been the principal investigator of numerous clinical investigational trials of endovascular abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, carotid stenting, thrombolysis and arterial stenting. He speaks frequently at international medical meetings and served for six years on the Vascular Surgery Board.
Dr. Hodgson was the inaugural editor of VESAP and stayed on as co-editor in chief for the subsequent two editions. He has served three terms as treasurer of the Society for Vascular Surgery, chaired the Society’s finance committee for three years, has been a member of the SVS Foundation board of directors, a member of the publications committee and the SVS board of directors.
