Dr. Prem chand Gupta, recognized as one of the leading vascular specialists in Hyderabad, India, has over 30 years of experience in vascular surgery and currently leads a team of 16 vascular specialists in his home country. During his medical schooling, vascular surgery was still an emerging specialty, and Dr. Gupta initially did not consider it his primary focus. His perspective changed during his residency in general surgery, where he worked under a chief who had trained in vascular surgery in the United States.

“I realized from this experience that we could perform procedures that nobody else could, and that attracted me to vascular surgery,” said Dr. Gupta.
He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and followed it with a Master of Surgery (MS) from PGIMER in Chandigarh, India. Currently, he serves as the clinical director and head of the vascular and endovascular surgery department, interventional radiology, and podiatric surgery at CARE Hospitals in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, India.
Other leadership roles include serving as the president of the Vascular Society of India and the World Federation of Vascular Societies.
Working in Hyderabad, a diverse, cosmopolitan city, allows his diverse team to treat patients from various states who speak different languages, ensuring effective communication.
"I have team members from different states who speak various languages, and it truly puts the patients at ease when spoken to in their native language," said Dr. Gupta.
Dr. Gupta values diversity within his multidisciplinary team, which includes vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, podiatric surgeons and psychologists, which of course includes female specialists. One of the few challenges he saw growing up was getting recognition as a specialist, but he believes “we’ve arrived there now.”
His involvement with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) began in 2009 when he received the International Scholars Award and attended the Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM). Since then, he has consistently participated in the meetings, recognizing VAM’s vital role in advancing international vascular science.
"Vascular Surgery is the Art of Scientifically dealing with Blood Vessels. VAM is a truly International Vascular meeting with great opportunity for learning and networking," said Dr. Gupta.
Dr. Gupta has observed more representation from the various scientific sessions within the SVS. He is optimistic about the future regarding diversity and equality, believing that SVS leadership is making significant strides to ensure everyone feels comfortable and included.
Dr. Gupta commends the SVS Foundation for raising awareness of vascular surgery across various platforms.
“The Foundation is supporting researchers and providing opportunities to learn and grow in the field,” said Dr. Gupta. “While we depend on industry to do a lot of funding for us. If we chip in, in whatever small way we can, it shows that we are dedicated, concerned, and have a buy-in in the Foundation.”
