Caring for a sick family member or friend can be overwhelming. While it is natural to focus on the patient, as a caregiver, it is also very important for you to be mindful of your own health—especially when dealing with diseases that require management over long periods of time. If you find yourself in this position, consider these tips and resources to make sure you are in the best position to support your loved one.

  • Take Care of Yourself: Ensure you maintain your own health and well-being. Neglecting your own health will make it harder to care for someone else. Be sure to eat nutritious foods, try to find time for exercise, and get enough rest.
  • Make a Plan: Consider creating an online calendar that can be shared with other family and friends. Having details of medical appointments, medication schedules, and other necessities in one place will make things easier on a day-to-day basis.
  • Seek Support: Join support groups, either online or in-person, to share experiences and gain advice from others in similar situations. Remember, you are not alone.
  • Knowledge is Power: Learn about the patient’s condition to better understand their needs and how to manage symptoms. Seek reliable resources from known institutions or organizations.
  • Communication is Key: Maintain open lines of communication with healthcare providers, family members, and your loved one.
  • Plan for the Future: Discuss and document advance care planning, including legal and financial matters.
