Medical experts with Tampa General Hospital said having an aortic dissection is not very common, but there are people who are at a higher risk. Dr. Halim Yammine spends his days doing different vascular surgeries at TGH, some of those surgeries are for aortic dissections. This dissection happens when there is a tear in the aorta, which is the major blood vessel that leaves our hearts and supplies our entire body with blood. “A dissection is a tear in the inner layer which causes blood flow between the layers of the blood vessel. So, you have multiple flow channels rather than just the normal one that we would have,” he said.
