Deep Vein Thrombosis

Purpose - Provide an up-to-date review of best practice and treatments for patients with deep venous thrombosis. In addition, encourage trainees to compete for ‘Best Deep Venous Management’ case.

Objectives – The goal of this session is to address the rapidly growing field of deep venous thrombus management. Therapeutic options for this clinical scenario are increasing year after year. However, there is a paucity of data on effectiveness and a wide variability in techniques. This session will highlight the available management options for DVT and examine evidence-based medicine.

Program – There will be 2 AVF/PGEC moderators and 4 eight-minute lectures by AVF leaders and experts in the field of DVT. The session will include a presentation for the “Best Resident DVT Case Submission.”

Target Audience for Case Submission

Students, residents and trainees.

Case Type of Interest

Trainees are invited to submit their best deep venous thrombosis (DVT) case. Submission should include pertinent patient history and physical examination, as well as management details. The DVT case can involve upper extremity, lower extremity, SVC and IVC pathologies. The submission with the highest score is offered the opportunity to participate and present a 5-minute PowerPoint in the session.

Endovation

Contemporary vascular practices have burgeoned in the use of endovascular therapy for complex aortic repair in the past decade. New techniques are utilized, described and trialed in patients previously unfit for open, custom or traditional repair options. This follow-up session (from VAM22) expands the theme of innovative solutions to encompass creative techniques for endovascular fenestration of Type B aortic dissection, arch off-the-shelf solutions as well as detailed techniques for physician-modified endografts provided by experts performing these techniques in real-world practices.

Target Audience for Case Submission

Students, residents and trainees.

Case Type of Interest

Emphasis on use of non-traditional surgical solutions; preferably non-IDE cases, so that wide applicability and diversity of submissions can be garnered. The best submissions will demonstrate creativity with widely available devices used in innovative ways and is expected to encompass cases of device modification (e.g. chimney, laser, back-table fenestration), device use in non-traditional fashion (e.g. TEVAR for angulated or large infrarenal, Octo-Fen) or hybrid operations (combination of endovascular device with surgery e.g. bypass sewn to modified aortic device).

Onco-Vascular Surgeon

The Onco-vascular Surgeon conference session aims to enhance vascular surgeon expertise in oncologic surgery, foster multidisciplinary teamwork and communication, and streamline coordination and preparedness for these high-stakes clinical scenarios. By providing strategies to minimize unplanned intraoperative calls and optimize operative setup, this session will equip surgeons with the knowledge and skills to confidently handle elective and urgent vascular consultations in cancer resections. We also emphasize the importance of effective communication among surgical services and the value of multidisciplinary teams in improving patient outcomes.

The session covers advanced reconstruction techniques for oncologic resections involving major vessels, increasing participants' comfort in performing these complex procedures. Additionally, we explore the role of endovascular therapy in facilitating cancer resections and discuss potential applications for improved patient outcomes. Join us at the Onco-vascular Surgeon conference session to refine your skills and contribute to better patient care in the intricate world of oncologic surgery.

Target Audience for Case Submission

Students, residents and trainees.

Case Type of Interest

We are particularly interested in cases that demonstrate:

  1. Multidisciplinary teamwork and effective communication among surgical services.
  2. Innovative operative planning and techniques.
  3. Challenging vascular reconstruction methods in oncologic resections.
  4. The application of endovascular therapy in oncologic resections.
  5. Lessons learned from unexpected intraoperative events and their resolutions.

To submit your case, provide a brief summary (250-300 words) that outlines the patient history, surgical intervention, and lessons learned from your experience. Ensure all submissions are de-identified to maintain patient confidentiality.
