Medical Student and General Surgery Resident
The overarching goal of the Fellow/General Surgery Resident/Medical Student educational program is to allow residents and students to explore their interest in vascular surgery. The program provides an opportunity for learners of all levels (first-year medical students to senior-level surgical residents to vascular surgery trainees) to meet others with similar interests, and more importantly, provides students and residents with the chance to meet members and leaders of the vascular surgical community.
Following are the numerous programs offered to residents and medical students during the Vascular Annual Meeting:
Open and Endovascular Simulation Training
The objective of this training program is to provide novice learners with an opportunity to learn how to perform basic vascular procedures. The session offers multiple simulation stations with varying simulations of vascular procedures, including performance of a vascular anastomosis on an arterial model (medical students), performance of an open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (surgical residents), and performance of an EVAR or TEVAR in a safe and stress-free environment. Attendees also will be able to participate in stations involving basic knot tying, instrument handling, needle accuracy/placement and suture placement and closure skills. As a bonus, participants will be able to compete in a mini skills competition, of which the results are announced during the Residency Fair.
This event is open only to the scholarship recipients of the VAM Travel and Diversity Medical Student Scholarship Programs.
This event will take place on Wednesday, following the Open and Endovascular Simulation Training and is open to all residents and medical students.
General Surgery Resident Program Breakfast
Residents are invited to learn about the next steps in their career! Topics include how to get the most out of fellowship, and how to interview and prepare for it. Participate in a panel discussion with program directors and trainees to round out the program.
Medical Student Program Breakfasts (MS1/2 & MS3/4)
Medical students will have the opportunity to learn how vascular surgery programs differ from integrated IR and cardiology programs, in addition to hearing from program directors and recent graduates on their perspective of setting yourself up for future success. Panel discussions with program directors and trainees will conclude the sessions.
Diversity Medical Student Scholarship Luncheon
Recipients of the Diversity Medical Student Scholarship will network with the SVS Leadership Development and Diversity Committee and other minority vascular surgeon leaders.
This event is open only to the scholarship recipients of the Diversity Medical Student Scholarship Program.
Networking Reception for Women, Diversity, and Young Surgeons
All residents and students are invited to attend the Networking Reception, co-hosted by the SVS Leadership Development and Diversity Committee & the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society.
